Our History

1941
Standard Gravel and Surfacing Limited was founded April 10, 1941 by Merv (Red) Dutton and Reg Jennings. With its head office in Calgary, the company soon became a significant force in the highway and airport construction market in Western Canada.

1963
The acquisition of General Construction Limited, a Vancouver company, owned and operated by John Boyd, lead to a new entity, Standard General Construction (International) Limited. The new company continued to service the British Columbia highway market and the City of Vancouver.

1968
The purchase of the company by BACM Industries, operated by the Simkin family of Manitoba resulted in more changes at Standard General. The company name became Standard General Construction Limited. The heavy construction operations were retained under the BACM banner and Standard General become more focused on the larger metropolitan markets of Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver, opening a new office in Edmonton in 1969.

1973
BACM was acquired by Genstar Development Company.

1984
Genstar was sold to Imasco Inc., who spun-off its construction and material businesses (including Standard General) to CBR Cement Canada Limited in 1986.

1994
CBR Cement and Heidelberger Zement Group formed an industrial partnership. The consolidation of these two companies resulted in the formation of CBR-HCI Construction Materials Corp. Standard General became a part of this large organization.

1996
Another name change came about as a result of a Heidelberger Zement and its subsidiary, the Inland Cement Group, corporate branding initiative, the company became Inland Construction Limited.

2000
Standard General was acquired by ColasCanada and placed within the Works Alberta group of companies.

Throughout these many changes, the company has continued to provide outstanding service and value to its many customers and clients in the Edmonton marketplace.
